Southampton Scout Activity Centre given sewage system boost

Southampton City Scouts is celebrating after receiving a £1,000 donation towards a new sewage system, after its site was at risk of closure following catastrophic failure.

The group discovered a ruined septic system shortly after taking over Woodmill Outdoor Centre in 2025. Following a failed attempt to recondition the system in February 2026, the Scouts launched a community appeal for local experts and to raise funds for a temporary system to keep the site open.

Waste management specialist CSG came forward to offer expert technical advice on the installation of a temporary septic storage tank – and has now handed over a cash gift towards a permanent replacement.

Joshua Smith, District Lead Volunteer at Southampton City Scouts, said: “We were shocked to discover the ruptured septic system and faced the prospect of having to shut the site, which would’ve ruined the summer for thousands of children.

“CSG stepped in with crucial technical advice that guided our temporary solution that allowed us to remain open. That was a tremendous gesture and meant we could say goodbye to portable toilets and reintroduce showers.

“But we’re not stopping there. We have set ourselves a target of £150,000 for a permanent sewage solution and our volunteer team were thrilled to receive this donation from CSG.

“Our vision is to create a place where every community group can enjoy the outdoors, including camping and water activities. We believe every young person deserves the chance to experience adventure, build confidence and connect with nature, no matter their background.”

Woodmill Outdoor Centre is used for water-based activities by thousands of children every year.

CSG’s donation comes through the company’s long-running Community Chest scheme, which supports groups and good causes around its 30 UK bases.

CSG has a long history in Hampshire having been founded in Botley in 1934. The business still has its headquarters in Fareham.

Steve Hicks, Operations Director at CSG, said: “We’re pleased to be able to support Southampton City Scouts, which gives young people amazing opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise enjoy.

“It’s such a beautiful site and we will use our expertise to offer guidance and support for the long-term management of the new system.

“We have helped dozens of good causes already through Community Chest and we’re always on the look out for more groups to support.”

CSG supports around 30,000 UK households with off-mains drainage systems such as septic tanks, sewage treatment plans and pump stations.

Alongside its domestic offering, CSG offers a full range of waste services for businesses across the country, including disposal of hazardous waste, including chemical and clinical waste, and waste oil.
