Maidstone’s Ian Crundwell toasted success as leading waste management specialist CSG put its top HGV drivers through their paces in a first-of-its kind competition.

Five of CSG’s best performing drivers travelled to the Science Museum site in Swindon – a filming location for The Grand Tour – where they took on a series of challenges to determine the overall champion.

Competitors were tested on reversing into a parking bay, driving through a slalom, braking and identifying defects on the truck.

Ian, 56, won £750 of Virgin Experience vouchers as well as a trip to the Scania’s head office in Sweden, where he will be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturer’s operations.

Ian said: “It was a fantastic day competing against my fellow drivers and I was thrilled to win.

“I’ve been with the company for 23 years and it is a tremendous place to work. The Driver of the Year competition was a great way to acknowledge the skilled drivers we have here.

“I’m really looking forward to visiting Sweden and to seeing what experiences I can enjoy with the vouchers.”

CSG employs hundreds of drivers across its 30 UK sites, who either transport domestic waste for disposal or industrial waste for treatment. They drive a wide variety of vehicles, including high-performance vacuum tankers, long-distance articulated liquid ring tankers and 44-tonne HGVs.

Steve Hicks, CSG HR Director, said: “CSG is all about the people within the business and helping everyone thrive.

“We pride ourselves on our drivers, who are highly skilled and are tested on the busy roads day in, day out. We regularly receive fantastic feedback about our drivers in terms of performance and customer service and we thought it was time to celebrate them and what they do.

“Our five finalists were nominated by their managers because of things like their low accident records, tachograph results and customer feedback. They are the best of the best and they really demonstrated their skills during our challenge day.

“We want to encourage our drivers to enjoy their jobs and strive for excellence. Our Driver of the Year competition was a huge success and plan to run it every year from now on.”

Runners-up Martin Dyer, Wayne Garner, Janis Datavs and Josh Sanderson received vouchers and Scania goodies for taking part.
