CSG announces record waste recovery as new report published
21 September 2022 by CSG
Industry leaders CSG has announced a best-ever 87% waste recovery record in its – and revealed how it will achieve Net Zero by 2040.
Waste management specialist CSG has taken the wraps off its first Environmental Sustainability Report, which sets out what the company is doing today to limit the operation’s impact on the planet and targets further improvements in the years to come.
The headline achievement to-date is an overall waste recovery rate of 86.59%. CSG’s new Blackburn site leads the way with 100% recovery figures.
CSG’s 13 processing sites across the country deal with a wide variety of complex or hazardous waste – including chemical by-products from manufacturing processes, photographic waste, industrial wastewater and waste oils – from businesses operating in a range of sectors including aerospace, logistics, manufacturing, research and public sector.
Antony Gerken, Permitting and Compliance Manager at CSG, said: “We are proud to unveil our first Environmental Sustainability Report, which follows months of hard work and research by our team.
“To deliver 87% waste recovery is a fantastic achievement, particularly considering the vast array of materials and substances our processing plants deal with.
“Our Blackburn site is a huge success story. We have deployed intensive deconstruction of wastes received, segregation of each component and routing of each component to specialist outlets for recovery.
“Achieving 100% recovery will be more difficult at other plants. Cadishead, for example, deals with waste that may have already been through an extensive recovery process, but our innovation team is always developing new ways to separate and process materials.
“The next landmark is 90% waste recovery and we believe that is achievable.”
CSG specialises in waste haulage, waste treatment and recovery, industrial cleaning and wastewater engineering.
CSG’s overall drive towards Net Zero by 2040 is in line with goals set out by the Environmental Services Association (ESA), the trade body representing the UK’s resource and waste management industry.
The 2040 goal is 10 years ahead of the UK government’s Net Zero target of 2050.
The Environmental Sustainability Report also looks at energy efficiency, water remediation and emissions control.
CSG’s environmental figures and projections have been assessed as part of audits carried out by BDO Global and DNV.
Neil Richards, Managing Director of CSG, said: “We have started on a journey of improved sustainability across the whole business, from increasing our energy and fuel efficiencies to maximising our waste recovery rates.
“Each of our goals are supported by ambitious actions and dynamic people. Our people are key to ensuring that we deliver on our goals of a sustainable future for all.”
Other achievements set out in the report include:
- Increased efficiency across the 160-strong fleet, with the amount of waste collected per litre of fuel used rising by 17.8% thanks, in part, to a new efficient routing system. An incredible 124,439,330 gallons of waste were collected last year – with 6.3 million miles covered.
- Tankers are replaced on an eight year cycle, meaning most of the fleet are now high-performing Euro 6 vehicles. Investigations are underway to assess the feasibility of switching to alternative fuels in the years ahead, with enquiries ongoing with a Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil vehicle supplier.
- In 2021 CSG cleansed and recovered 321,491m3 of contaminated water – enough to fill 150 Olympic sized swimming pools or 460 million bottles of wine.
- Energy efficiency at plants also increased due to improvements in operations, including LED lighting.
CSG’s Environmental Sustainability Report will be reviewed and updated on a yearly basis to ensure targets are being met.
Neil added: “CSG is 90 years old in 2024. Our founder, Edgar “Bunny” Hart, started with a second-hand tanker and a vision. Our services may have changed, but our core values haven’t – a sustainable business in a sustainable environment providing sustainable employment.”
