How do cesspools / cesspits work?

Your cesspit is a sealed, watertight underground tanks that capture wastewater and sewage and simply collect it, without processing or treating it in any way.

Depending on the size of the tank, the property and the number of occupants, the cesspit can fill up quickly and needs to be emptied regularly; at monthly, quarterly or annual intervals as required. Cesspits will usually be discreetly buried underground with a single manhole cover for access by the waste collection team. They are typically used where the ground is unsuitable for the waste to be treated by a soakaway, such as sites close to water sources or drinking water supplies.

CSG’s Cesspit Top Tips

  • Ensure the system is emptied frequently
  • Don’t allow flammable or hazardous liquids to enter the system
  • Don’t allow the area around the manhole cover to become overgrown or obscured in order to allow easy access for clearances
