CSG obtains storage tank assessor accreditation

Leading waste management specialist CSG can offer certified storage tank inspections for the first time – and has simplified the process by investing in a high-tech drone.

Sam Richards, who has been with CSG for five years, has qualified as an EEMUA 159 Storage Tank Assessor.

CSG’s confined space team is highly experienced in the cleaning, inspection, tankering, waste treatment and management of storage tanks.

The business has utilised the services of independent assessor Steve Scott to review the inspection results and produce the final report for several years.

But, with Steve set to retire, Sam decided to embark on the EEMUA training himself – and passed the exams with flying colours.

Sam said: “We have an eight-strong confined space team and have been growing the storage tank inspection side of the business.

“Until now, we have had to subcontract the formal inspection and report aspect – but I have completed the qualification myself, allowing us to bring the full service under one roof.

“I have received fantastic mentoring from Steve over the years and have examined countless tanks, so that was an excellent grounding for me.

“This is an exciting step forward for CSG and we are looking to expand the service and grow the team moving forward.”

CSG’s team looks at the overall health of the storage tank, ensuring the products inside haven’t caused any problems and there are no corrosion or structural issues.

Tests are carried out to ensure the tanks meet UK and international safety and environmental standards, while advising on risk-based maintenance and expected life span.

Last year CSG invested £100,000 in a drone that makes the inspection process far easier and safer.

Sam said: “The drone is ground-breaking and has already made a tremendous difference.

“Whereas previously it could take a week to erect scaffolding around a tank to obtain access, the drone can now fly in almost immediately.

“We have worked on tanks up to 90 metres in diameter containing tens of thousands of tonnes of crude oil. Without a drone, inspections can require tens of thousands of pounds in setup costs before work even begins. Using a drone removes much of this upfront expense, making the inspection significantly cheaper for the customer.

“Utilising a drone is also far safer than sending a human into the tank.

“The use of LIDAR sensors and HD cameras allow us to map the tanks metal thickness in a 3D image. The results are extraordinarily accurate and ensure the interior and exterior of the tank is in appropriate condition.”

As well as carrying out private inspections, Sam and his team are also visiting all CSG sites around the country with storage tanks to ensure compliance and safety.

Storage tanks typically require inspection every three to five years.
