CSG colleagues celebrate NVQ success

Eight employees at leading waste management specialist CSG have enhanced their knowledge by completing an industry-specific NVQ qualification.

Darren Sherwood, Joe Brickhill, Lee MacDonald, Luke Crossley, Daniel Life, Jack Rowland, Jake Bennett and Daniel Southgate – who are all based at CSG’s Cadishead base – signed up to the Waste Resource Operative Level 2 certification.

Keen to further improve their knowledge of the waste industry, the colleagues participated in monthly tutor sessions, followed by an online exam, as well as an observation and practical exam.

They were also given a workbook to complete each month by the examining board, CIWM, and were expected to log the hours spent working on site outside of their usual roles.

Luke Crossley received a distinction for his work throughout the course.

Darren Sherwood, an aluminium operator with CSG, said: “I feel like it’s massively benefitted me. You go to different areas of the business and it gives you a clearer idea of what you’re looking at. It helps you understand the ‘how’ and the ‘why.’”

CSG has always held apprenticeships in high regard and understands the importance of staff continuing to develop their knowledge and skills. CSG Managing Director Neil Richards began his career as an apprentice and has ensured self-improvement is deeply embedded in the business’ culture.

Darren added: “I’d definitely volunteer for a course like this again. It expands your knowledge and skillset on site and it opens doors to other roles you might want to pursue in the future.”

The qualification covered a wide range of topics, from the hierarchy of waste management to a deeper understanding of health and safety.

Joe Brickhill, another learner, added: “This is a Level 2 qualification but in the future we hope to have the opportunity to progress to Level 3 or 4, which could help us move into management roles.

“We’re really grateful for the opportunity CSG has given us to further develop our skills. It’s not something we could have done without working in the waste industry, or without CSG allowing us this opportunity.”

Dave Lawson, Cadishead Site Manager, said: “The team has shown fantastic determination in achieving their NVQ Level 2. It’s great to see their efforts formally recognised and it reflects the pride they take in their work. Their achievement is a clear example of how we’re continuously raising standards on site.”
